The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly but we observed newly emerged monarchs on Beebrush (Aloysia wrightii) and Parry penstemon (Penstemon parryi) plants.

The Friends of the San Pedro River care for the San Pedro House Xeriscape Demonstration Garden. A native milkweed section was added in 2019.  Today, docent landscapers observed the first monarch butterflies of the year in the Garden. The monarch on the Beebush just emerged from its chrysalis and is drying its wings. The second monarch also recently emerged and was beginning to open its wings. Did you know that after two weeks within the chrysalis, they will emerge as adult butterflies? Did you know that in July 2022, migratory monarchs were officially classified as endangered, but, as recently as June 2022, it was reported that populations were more stable than previously thought? Learn more at Monarch Butterflies: Are They Endangered or Stable? New to the Area

I am a recent transplant from Southern California, and need to learn what can grow/thrive in this climate. I have had moderate Coastal Climate in my yards in the past, and although I am living in a rental, want to pursue container gardening here in Huachuca City. I am not familiar with what survives the winter and summer months locally.

I would enjoy whatever feedback you can give.........pdm
