Does anyone live in Summit Ridge in Sierra Vista?
Last summer our neighborhood had many snakes. My next door neighbor had two, I had one come in the door while napping and woke up to baby rattler curled up a foot from my chair. Another neighbor had One in his tree. Then I found out various neighbors around the block had them all within the same week.
Aug Sept. time frame ?
Debbie come out to Veterans Park in the summer I bring 1 or 2 of my ( babies) on Sunday to educate people on snakes here is a Picture of my "little girl " Luna
Wow! Beautiful! Wouldn't a snake of that size squeeze you? Lol
Debbie, I've held this one that Bill had in the park. It will not hurt you. Take him up on the offer. You should respect snakes but not fear them. Some can hurt you, most are harmless and beneficial.
I've held Pythons (smaller ones. Lol) I only fear venomous ones, and don't want to come upon one in my house, or my bed!!! Lol
I am petrified of that.
Debbie I have had her since she was a month old my late Daughter used to call her my scaly puppy Luna is now about 18.5 feet long and would not hurt anyone I have taken her to classrooms where 5 and 6 year old's drag her around like a sack of potatoes she does not care she has been handled every day of her life
Awww, she sounds like a sweetheart. I would love to hug her. ❤❤❤❤
Yes they do snakes are all around us just like any critter they are out to find food and reproduce I talked to Sierra Vista Animal Control they no longer remove snakes they call the fire Department and IMO that is WRONG as they have more important things to do like saving lives call a licensed relocation person that has had experience in dealing with venomous snakes I have been dealing with Venomous and non venomous snakes for over 45 years and am licensed with the stare of Arizona Game and Fish to remove and relocate reptiles I do not charge a fee I just ask for donations to help with gas and food as I give them a meal befoure I release them hope this helps
Have a GREAT DAY and welcome to Sierra Vista :-D
Thank you so much. Yes, this does help! I will call you if I need one removed. Lol.....
After all the snake stories I'm hearing, I might change my mind about moving there. Lol
Oh no. The positives far outweigh the negatives and you'll soon find that snakes, especially when you have a guy like Bill around, are not that big a deal.
Thank you so much Shannon. I will be moving to the Summit Ridge neighborhood. The street is Skyline. Wondering if anyone else lives there and if there is a big problem there. Also, if coyotes are around there too. I have 5 small dogs that I'm most worried about.
Debbie, I've lived here for over 15 years and in a semi-rural area. Snakes are not a problem.
I think I'm more worried about my dogs.
I was on my way to work one morning and saw this pair of Rattlers mating in the street. They weren't happy that I stopped to watch them but it didn't deter them. Not sure if it's going to load. I'll try again.

Wow, interesting! I've never seen that. Thanx for sharing. Looks like u live outside of town??
hate to break it to you BUT that is 2 males fighting over the right to breed a near by Female
Actually I'd be more concerned about coyotes coming into your yard going after pets. Their in big cities, small towns, their everywhere.
Well, I can scare them off. I will be outside if my dogs are out. Do the coyotes only come at night?
From what I've read coyotes generally hunt their prey durning the day. I lived in Mesa AZ (a suburb of Phoenix) for over 30 years, would catch a glimpse of one at least once a month. They can jump over a 6 foot high block fence, I've seen them do it.
Eeeeekkkkk!!!! We have 5 small dogs.
I've grown up with coyotes and they will snatch a little dog right from in front of you even if it's on a leash. If you see a coyote, pick your dog up and slowly walk away.
Debbie, I walk my dogs in a 10 acre undeveloped area surrounded by homes. I have had several encounters with coyotes in early morning hours. One day, my Chihuahua was off leash and I heard him barking. When I reached him, he was on the trail barking at a coyote that was leaping back and forth but keeping his distance.
In another instance, I looked back at my Sheltie who was off leash and trailing about 20 yards behind me. Behind her about 25 yards was a coyote the size of a German Shepherd. I was able to drive him off by waving my arms and hollering at him. I love wildlife.
The Summit Ridge area is very urban, the likelihood of you encountering snakes or coyotes are MUCH less than where I live south of Ramsey Canyon Road.
How scary!! I also have 2 Chihuahuas, and one of them refuses to walk on leash. I won't be walking in any desolate areas, if that makes a difference. Lol
I really appreciate your feedback.
Our neighborhood in Holiday has probably seen more snakes than we desire, but there has been construction going on and they like to sun themselves. If there are fields nearby the housing development you may come across one. I've only seen one on the side of a walking path, but I keep my eyes open when I know they are coming out for the season.
The season being.........April thru ????????
Typically April through November, but some have been seen earlier and even in December.
There are no more snakes in Arizona than in California. I live on 15 acres and see a snake perhaps once every two or three years. If I do - it's a Gopher Snake.
Oh thank you for that! Lol
😊
YIKES!!!!!!!! Are u in town in a neighborhood, or outside of town?
I’m 10 miles east of Sierra Vista.
I moved here from Hawaii a few years ago where we have no snakes, but snakes are apart of this wonderful landscape & as long as you don’t provoke them you’ll be fine. No need to kill them, they’ll move along soon.
I also took my dog to snake detection classes but she was sitting next to me when this snake lounged behind us both & she never sensed it (literally 18” behind us) so obviously she failed in school LOL
I've heard of the snake detection school for dogs as well. My dogs would probably fail the class too, and get me killed. Lol
Yes...it's often called "Snake Proofing"...the dogs are taught to avoid rattlesnakes through use of a shock collar. . There's a good one in Sierra Vista...it's a Kennel called Going to Grandmas.
That's where my dog went, twice.
what a Beautiful Female Diamond back
It looks like it just had a meal... digesting and relaxing.
Jennifer more like Pregnant
I was thinking it had just eaten as well Jennifer, & Bill thinks possibly pregnant. Cool! Regardless it was fine sitting with my dog & I for quite a while. After I finally saw it & went inside I watched it from my window move on. I guess it was patiently waiting for us to leave.
I live in a rural area, 5 miles outside of Willcox. Every summer the local gopher snake surprises me on our property every year. I only wish the cotton tails would leave it alone. Last spring I found the first rattler in 4 years, a 12" Mojave rattlesnake on my carport. Two night later another 12" Mojave.
OMG!!!!! I didn't think mojaves's got that big. I think I could handle seeing one, but it's my dogs I'm worried about. They would surely get themselves bitten.
That's 12 inches, babies. The adult mohave average between 40 inches to 50 inches long.
The gopher snakes I've seen on out property are between 5 feet and 6 feet long.
My mistake. I was thinking 12 feet. I see u wrote inches. Sorry. 😊
Most snakes will not bother you if you don't happen upon them suddenly and frighten them, just as you would be frightened if someone came upon you unawares. You can pick them up with a broom handle or something like that and put the snake in a bucket and carry it away into a different area or best call the city fire department. I am not afraid of them at all, but respect them and their space. Please don't kill them. They are beautiful creatures and they control the rats and mice.
Thank you Bonnie. I would be too scared to get close enough to try and kill them.
My husband is afraid of them, too.
Bonnie I do not recommend messing with them it is better to call a licensed professional or the fire department to deal with them I talked to the supervisor of Sierra Vista Animal Control and she told me they do not deal with snake calls anymore and that the fire Dept. does it and IMO they have enough to do like saving lives I am licensed by Arizona game and fish to capture and relocate reptiles I have been dealing with venomous and non venomous snakes for over 45 years :-D
Bill, I agree. I am just not afraid of them or the coyotes (I love them) and even the javelina will not bother you if you don't bother them. Usually, if they have young, you try and avoid them. I think there is more to be concerned about with scorpions and poisonous spiders. you can't see them. But again, these things are part of our environment and make it the beautiful place it is.
Bill, Where do you release your snakes? I’m in Palominas, and i had five rattlers on my covered concrete patio in August. We joke that you are releasing them at my house.
I would never release them by any people pets or livestock I know where there is 4 very big dens that I take them to and as for Coral snakes I know where a colony of Coral's live too I have 2 Diamond backs in my bedroom right now a small male and a small Female that I can not release till spring when it warms up a bit
:-D
I appreciate your snake rescue. I hope to call you next time because killing them is just too scary.
Omg! In your bedroom??!! Lol.........
Thank you Bill!!! Tell me, is it so bad in Sierra Vista in Summit Ridge, that I should reconsider moving there? Lol........I know, sounds ridiculous, but that is how petrified I am of them. Has anyone ever told u they found one in their bed? Lol
not in their bed but I have pulled a rattler out of a bedroom ( it was a DBL wide and no cover/vents on the heater ducts) however I have gotten a lot out of garage's but that is a easy fix just keep it closed ;-)
Short answer is yes. We are in a desert and semi-rural area and we have snakes. Most of them are harmless but we do have rattlesnakes. Depending on where you decide to settle in and around Sierra Vista will determine to what extent you may encounter a snake.
I live outside the city limits and have had to call the fire department to remove a 6 1/2 ft rattle snake from my back patio. I volunteer with the Sierra Vista Police Department and know that the police officers are called out to remove snakes from local residences. I personally removed an 18" Gopher snake from someone's back yard.
I believe snakes have a beneficial effect on the environment and I do not kill snakes. I have had Gopher snakes and a Whip snake in my yard which I leave alone. I even had one crawl through my doggie door and into my computer room. The one in my computer room was captured and released in the rear of my yard.
Again, depending on where you choose to live, there are other things that might be of greater concern. For instance, Javelinas are more common than snakes in my area and can be hazardous to people and pets. Just yesterday I encountered a group of 5 adults, 1 youngster and 2 baby Javelinas while walking my dogs. The Javelinas and I choose to coexist by going in different directions.
I have lived here for over 15 years and love the interaction between me and the wildlife.
I am guessing outside of the city limits, one would encounter many more creatures. ?? Scorpions?
What are Javelinas? A wild dog? Thank u so much for your response. 😊
Javelinas are wild pigs. They are more aggressive when they have babies with them. They like to knock over garbage cans in our neighborhood and rummage for food.
https://www.desertmuseum.org/kids/oz/long-fact-sheets/Javelina.php
My husband and I have come across them a few times on our early morning walks before dawn. They typically scurry away or we try to ignore them.
The coyotes are more afraid of us or just stand still and watch us walk by because we have dogs with us. They dogs go nuts if they see them though. Typically if a coyote pursues you they could be rabid. We have come across them at dusk and early morning after dawn in our neighborhood.
http://www.desertmuseum.org/kids/oz/long-fact-sheets/coyote.php
We see many creatures and we live in the city, but closer to the southern end by Hereford.
That's not too far from me. I'll be at the southern end of sierra vista.
Thank you so much for all the great info! I appreciate it.
Jennifer last year I was called out to capture many critters to sum it up I relocated 98 Diamond backs 6 Mojave's 1 Black Tail rattlesnakes and 1 Coral snake and I would say 85% of them came from in and around Sierra Vista the Coral snake was found in a garage in a subdivision over by Canyon Vista Medical Center
What is the best way to get in touch with you, Bill? I'm thinking people should put you on speed dial because that's how fast their heart rate will be when they encounter a snake.
my number has been out for ever LOL I was told my # is even up in the post office in Pearce LOL 520-227-3597 As far as I know I am the only person licensed in Cochise County by Arizona Game and Fish to capture and relocate reptiles
We had a snake in our backyard last summer - coiled up in a corner next to the house. We were just sure it was a rattler - and called Animal Control. Two of their personnel showed up a while later and quickly caught the snake - not a rattler - but a similar color - and not poisonous. They were extremely helpful, friendly, and informative. They said it just crawled up and over our 6' cement block wall. That's a bit creepy.
We aren't as concerned as we once were - but are still vigilant.
KUDOS to the Police/Animal Control!
J. R.
Thank you for your response. Omg, that's what I'm scared about. Finding one in my yard, or my dogs finding one. I'm glad yours wasn't a rattler. 😊
I have heard there is a new rattler vaccine for dogs.
Yes there is a vaccine, and I read that it doesn't work for certain snakes. I think the Mojave is one of them. It only buys a little bit of time anyway. You still have to rush them to a vet. I guess any amount of time is worth it.
I"ve heard of "snake proofing" dogs so they won't get bitten.
Snakes are not poisonous they are VENOMOUS big difference although Rattlesnakes do climb it is very rare the snakes that do most of the climbing are the Sonoran Gopher snake and the banded King snake and as for dying from a snake bite with all the antivenom out there you have more of a chance dying walking across the road and getting hit by a car 7 to 8,000 people are bitten per year in the US and only 1 in 50 million will die that is 5 to 6 fatalities per year in the entire US
What about my dogs though? I'm more worried about them getting bitten. I will get them the rattlesnake vaccination, but I don't think it's a guarantee. Still have to rush to a vet.
I had five rattlesnakes by my front door in August, 2020. It was my first year here. I’m in Palominas. It was horrifying. Don’t judge me, I killed them all.
No judgement here!! Lol
Are u in the actual desert, or in a neighborhood?? Lol
I am petrified of them. How in the heck did u kill them all??!!! I admire you! Lol
I will be moving to a neighborhood, and was hoping they weren't so popular there.
I understand people fear snakes but PLEASE just give me a call and I will relocate them much better than killing them 520-227-3597 I respond very quickly 24 hours a day I do this free of charge however donations are welcome as it helps pay for gas and food as I offer them a meal before I release them I am licensed by the Arizona Game and fish to capture and relocate reptiles
Have a GREAT day
Thank u for that. I thought I would be safe in a neighborhood opposed to the middle of the desert, but looks like I was wrong. Lol.......I am petrified of coming across one.
Hi Debbie, welcome to Sierra Vista!
There were 193 snake bites in all of Arizona (excluding Maricopa County) reported to the AZ Poison and Drug Information Center in 2020, with our rattlesnakes purported to be most active in April, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. We have many tips on how to stay safe and cautious here!
I'm so happy to see all the other neighbors jump in to give their perspectives and welcome you to our community. Please let us know if there's anything else you'd like to know about Sierra Vista, and check out our neighbors' advice for those new to the area!
Thank you for welcoming me! I appreciate everyone's comments about snakes! I am in a part of California where we don't have to worry about that. Lol
I am told that the Mojave is the one to fear. 😳
Debbie yes Mojave's are more venomous than the Western Diamond back however they will NOT chance you down we have a few venomous snakes around here the most common are the Western Diamond back the Mojave and the Black Tail rattlesnakes we also have the Sonoran Coral snake witch is the most venomous snake in the US just a little info .... baby rattlers are not more venomous than adults and mothballs or any of the snake repellant you buy in the store will not keep snakes away it is nothing more than rodent poison witch IMO is worse than having snakes around as it will most likely kill the bird or other critter that eats the poisoned rodent
Bill, thank you so much for all the great info! I appreciate it! I was hoping they didn't actually come into neighborhoods. Lol
The snakes were here before we were. Get a rattler or gopher snake at least once every other year. Nothing to worry about really.
Thank you Gregory. I just have this vision of snakes roaming the neighborhoods of Arizona. Haha!!
We live in Winterhaven and have never seen any snakes
Good! Thank you so much for responding!
It depends where you live. I’m 10 miles out of town & see snakes on my property several times a year.
(Western Diamondback & Coachwhips mainly)
Thank you April. I am so worried about the Mojave Rattlesnakes. Lol
Have heard lots of bad things. Lol
Welcome to Sierra Vista - It’s an amazing place. Snakes are seen but very infrequent, but as a life long Arizonan I’ve known very few that have had bad run-ins. If you keep your distance they will too. in fact we’ve had a resident king snake (non venomou) that has helped tremendously with small mice and they eat rattlers to boot. The desert takes a little getting use to but it’s SO well worth it.
It might be helpful to see if @Dana Chiueh could find out from the hospital how many confirmed snake bites occur a year?
Thank you for welcoming us. I know we will love it there. I can't wait for our escrow to close! Lol
That's so funny. Small world. Assume you're military, seems most people that move here are military. We really like it here. We rented a house close to where you are buying and were very happy there. Mostly quiet and I never saw a snake lol
Nope, not military. Just retired, and that's where we chose to go. I have a sister in Pima. Thank u so much for the snake info. I feel better. Lol
I'm also from California and have found the snakes here seem to be the same. Rattlers mostly, I haven't seen any personally but I've seen pictures of them.
Thank you for your response. I am so afraid of running into one in my yard. Lol. What part of California are you from? Do you also live in Sierra Vista now?
We are just outside of Sierra Vista now but lived in town the first few years and I have yet to see any snakes lol. I'm from Redding in Northern California. Where are you coming from in CA? We have been very happy here.
My husband has family in Redding! We were just there about a month ago. Im in Hollister. I can't wait to move there. We are still in escrow. We're buying a house on Skyline Drive in sierra vista.
