Can anyone tell me what this is attached to a mesquite tree trunk? Is it hardened sap? I am fairly new to the area, have oodles of mesquite trees on my property, but this is a first sighting of this pinkish, super hard, curl.

Where am I?

This could be "sap" ( cut part with clippers or scissors, should be easy but gluee. Place sample in bottle or bowl of water, let dissolve. If so- it is sap. But looking at photo, sap would drop down, not grow up (in horn fashion) and suspect some form of parasite infection. Sap can be clear, light amber to dark maple syrup color and will glob and drip similar to candle wax.
